    Who speaks Montenegrin?

Approximately 150 thousand people use Montenegrin all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. Montenegrin belongs to the group of the South Slavic languages constituting part of a large family of the Indo-European languages. Together with Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian, it is often treated as the Serbo-Croatian language. However, some linguists are of the opinion that Montenegrin should be treated as a completely separate language. Montenegrin is basically used only by citizens of Montenegro. In 2007, Montenegrin became the official language in Montenegro.

    History of the Montenegrin language

Montenegrin is one of four standard variants of the Serbo-Croatian polycentric language. It is based on the Shtokavian dialect. Even the Declaration of the Montenegrin PEN Centre, which deals with the promotion of the language, contains a statement that “the Montenegrin language does not mean a systemically separate language, but just one of four names (Montenegrin, Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian), by which Montenegrins name their part of the Shtokavian dialect, commonly inherited with Muslims, Serbs and Croats”. In 2017, many Montenegrin writers, scientists, journalists, activists and other public figures from Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia signed a Declaration on the Common Language, which states that in Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia a standard language of the polycentric type consisting of several versions (similarly to German, English and Spanish) is used. In 2009, a new Montenegrin Latin alphabet was announced as standard.
