Who speaks Romanian?
Romanian belongs to the Indo-European language family, being part of the Romance language group. It is used by approximately 24 million people in the world. The most users of this language are, of course, in Romania, but we may also encounter them in Moldavia, Israel, Serbia and Ukraine. Much smaller communities of people using Romanian are present in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Hungary, the USA and Canada.
History of the Romanian language
Latin brought by the Romans in the 2nd century AD to the areas of Dacia was mixed with the Dacian language. As a result of the overlap of both languages, Romanian was slowly formed. The next stage of the Romanian language was to a great extent influenced by the neighbouring Slavs. It is estimated that at first 50% of words were borrowed from the Slavic languages. Currently, it is approximately 15%. The Romanian language has derived a lot from old Bulgarian. The strong influence of the Slavic languages was justified not only by the neighbourhood, but primarily by the common religion, which was Orthodox Christianity, and which in those days played a major cultural role. It is interesting that Romanian by the end of the 19th century was recorded with the Cyrillic alphabet, and first words were recorded in church documents, written in a local variety of the Church Slavonic language. The modern literature was developed in the Romanian language by Mihai Eminescu.
Romanian in business
Romanian is used in the areas which are not a popular business destination. Of course, companies that plan to develop their business activities in Romania or Serbia, this language may be very helpful, although it does not play a significant role in the international arena.
