Moldovan belongs to the group of the Romance languages (precisely the Eastern Romance languages) constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Moldovan is commonly regarded as a dialect of Romanian language, especially in Romania, where a large number of this language’s users live. History of the Moldovan language

Moldovan appeared for the first time in the Principality of Moldavia in the mid-sixteenth century. Earlier in these areas, the Old Church Slavonic language was used. First texts which appeared in the Moldovan language, are the Bible (precisely, the Scheia, Voronet and Hurmuzaki Psalters). Another important work in the history of the Moldovan language is the Codex of Voronet, in which the Moldovan-Romanian Rhotacism was taken into account (transition of a certain sounds into a “r” sound). One of the most important literary works written in Moldovan is Hieroglyphic History written by Dimitrie Cantemir, the first novel written in the Moldovan language. By 1860, Moldovan was written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Then, the process of the transfer to the Latin alphabet continued until the end of the 19th century.
