Who speaks Russian?
Russian belongs to the Indo-European language family. We find it in the group of the Eastern Slavic languages. Currently, approximately 300 million people in the world speak Russian, and for slightly less than half of them, this is their native language.
We can communicate in it in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Moldavia, Georgia and, of course, Russia. It is also one of the six UN languages. As one of the few languages used in Europe, it does not use the Latin, but the Cyrillic alphabet, or its simplified form – Grazhdanka, which is more similar to the Latin alphabet. Other difficulties during translation? Russian comprises three large groups of dialects: Northern, Central (or Middle) and Southern, which are further divided into specific dialects.
History of the Russian language
The history of Russian actually began with the Pre-Slavic period (approx. 1500 BC), during which the Pre-Slavic language was born, common for practically all Slavs. In the Old Russian period between the 11th and 14th centuries, literature was created and evolved in different parts of the country. During the unification period (until the 18th century), national literature was created, and along with it – the language which in the 19th century was finally formed.
