Who speaks Danish?

Danish belongs to the group of the North Germanic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Only 5.2 million people communicate in this language.

Danish language has the status of the official language in Denmark and the Faeroe Islands. A lot of people speak Danish in the northern region of Germany – Schleswig-Holstein. Interestingly, it is also taught in Iceland as one of the main foreign languages, in addition to English and Norwegian, due to the fact that Iceland was in a personal union with Denmark until 1944.

History of the Danish language

First Danish texts written in Latin come from the 13th century. The standard Danish language was developed in the 17th century on the basis of the Zealandic dialect. Danish is currently quite a uniform language. Dialects are neither popular or developed. Interestingly, southern dialect of the Swedish language are included into Danish dialects. It results from the fact that until 1658 these areas were inhabited by Danish population.

Danish in business

Since Danish is used only by the Danish population, its knowledge will be very helpful in the development of business in Denmark. Its knowledge will surely make it easier and faster to succeed on its market. In the international arena, Danish does not play a significant role.
