Who speaks Ukrainian?
Ukrainian belongs to the group of the Eastern Slavic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. It is spoken by approximately 50 million people. The Ukrainian language is not uniform – we may distinguish three groups of dialects: Northern, South-eastern and South-western, consisting of approximately 16 types of total dialects in total.
History of the Ukrainian language
We encounter first traces of the Ukrainian language in the 12th century, in South Ruthenia (West territories). Until the 14th century, the Ukrainian phonetic was formed. Ivan Kotlyarevsky had a huge influence on the shape of literary language. By publishing Eneyida in 1798, he introduced the folk language into literature. In the 19th century, there were attempts to stop the expansion of the Polish language in Ukraine by the introduction of the Old Church Slavonic language or Russian as the common language – only differently pronounced. In 1861, Ruthenians were guaranteed the freedom of both spoken and written language.
Ukrainian in business
Ukrainian does not play a significant role in the international arena, and its use is limited in general to Ukraine itself. However, more and more companies – especially employment agencies – extend their activities, looking for Ukrainians willing to carry out temporary, usually physical work in Poland.
