Who speaks Flemish?
Approximately 6.5 thousand people use Flemish all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. Flemish belongs to the group of the West Germanic languages constituting part of a large family of the Indo-European languages. It is mainly used by people living in Belgium, the Netherlands and France. It is considered to be a Belgian version of the standardised Dutch language and that is why it is called Flemish Dutch or Belgian Dutch. In the Brussels Capital region, it has the status of the official language.
History of the Flemish language
It is difficult to speak about a completely separate history of Flemish. It is still a form of the Dutch language, which since 1973 has been the official language in Flanders. The differences between Flemish and Dutch are largely based on different pronunciation principles and small differences in syntax. In 1980, the Netherlands and Belgium signed the Treaty on the Dutch Language Union, as a result of which fifteen years later changes were introduced into the Flemish language. The term “Flemish” has been used since the 14th century with respect to the language and dialects of people who lived in Flanders and the Duchy of Brabant.
