Who speaks Latvian?
Similarly to Lithuanian – it belongs to the group of the Baltic languages, and more precisely the Eastern Baltic languages, constituting part of the Indo-European language family. The number of people using Latvian does not exceed 2 million people. It is divided into 3 dialects: Livonian dialect (northern part of the country – now an extinct dialect), Middle dialect (western and central part) and Latgalian dialect (eastern part). We may communicate in it only in Latvia and in some regions of Canada and the USA, where emigrant minorities from Latvia may be found.
History of the Latvian language
Latvian developed to some extent in the same manner as Lithuanian, but it was under a greater influence of Germanic and Finno-Ugric languages. For this reason, it has features that cannot be found in other Baltic languages. Latvian is also characterised by a growing number of loanwords from German and Swedish. As of 1631, works on the systematisation of orthography began. Previously its orthography had been very chaotic and largely influenced by the German language. Since the 20th century, new fully developed orthography has been used.
Latvian in business
Latvian plays a role in business only within cooperation with Latvia. It is a language used in everyday life by 60% of the country’s population and its knowledge is undoubtedly useful in trade relationships. Outside Latvia, it is practically not used.
