Who speaks Vietnamese?
Approximately 76 million people use Vietnamese all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. Vietnamese belongs to the group of the Mon-Khmer languages constituting part of a large family of the Austroasiatic languages. Vietnamese is commonly used mainly in Vietnam. In addition, we may encounter it in Cambodia, Laos and other countries in East Asia. A large number of Vietnamese emigrants are in the United States.
History of the Vietnamese language
It is thought that the beginnings of the Vietnamese language should be looked for in the areas of the Red River located in northern Vietnam. The Vietnamese were under the influence of China for a long time. The ruling elite adopted the Chinese (Mandarin) language as the official language. It resulted in the permeation of Chinese vocabulary and grammar structures into the Vietnamese language. Nowadays Sino-Vietnamese words constitute approximately one third of the Vietnamese vocabulary. When France invaded Vietnam at the end of the 19th century, the French language gradually replaced Chinese as the official language in education and government. In this period, the Vietnamese took over a lot of French words. We may distinguish the following historical periods of the Vietnamese language development: Pre-Vietnamese (also referred to as Proto-Viet-Muong), Proto-Vietnamese, Archaic Vietnamese, Ancient Vietnamese, Middle Vietnamese and Modern Vietnamese.
Use of the Vietnamese language in business
In order to carry out business activities in Vietnam, Vietnamese will be necessary. It will also be useful in Laos and Cambodia. Therefore, acting on those markets, it is extremely important to take care of professional translations of all corporate materials into Vietnamese, whereas in the case of importing goods (for example, footwear or machines and mechanical devices) to the Polish market, it is worth taking care of professional translations from Vietnamese into Polish.
