Who speaks Belarusian?
Belarusian belongs to the Indo-European language family. It is part of the group of the Eastern Slavic languages. It is used by less than 10 million people.
Nowadays, we may only communicate in this language in Belarus, but its role has been decreasing even there. There are two groups of dialects that comprise the Belarusian language: North-Eastern and South-Western.
History of the Belarusian language
The history of this language begins in the 14th century, when it was separated from Old Russian. From the 18th to the 19th century, the status of the Russian language declined. In the 19th century, the Belarusian language started to form. Polish and Belarusian writers and artists contributed to a great extent to this process. The formation and the establishment of Belarusian as the official language lasted until the 20th century. In 1918, its full grammar was determined by the publication of B. Taraszkiewicz.
Belarusian in business
The role of Belarusian in business occurs only in the context of business contacts with Belarus – the only country using this language. However, it should be noted that even there its presence has been declining – nowadays we cannot hear it on the media, in the public administration or at universities, where for some time it has been replaced by the Russian language.
