Who speaks Slovak?
Slovak belongs to the group of the West Slavic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. It is used by approximately 7 million people. Slovak plays the role of the official language only in two places – in Slovakia and Serbian Vojvodina. And they are the only places where we may communicate in this language. Slovak is not a uniform language, we distinguish three dialects: Eastern Slovak, Central Slovak and Western Slovak, which differ greatly.
History of the Slovak language
The history of Slovak is divided into two periods, the first of which was the pre-literary period lasting until 1000 AD, when Great Moravia was founded. In the Christianisation period, it was the place of activities carried out by Cyril and Methodius, who used the Old Church Slavonic language, which as a result of many processes was transformed in these areas into the pre-literary language. The second period began in the 17th century, when first works codifying the Slovak language – Grammatica Slavica (1790) – a grammar textbook and Etymologia Vocum Slavicarum (Etymology of Slavic Words) (1791).
Slovak in business
Since Slovak is used only by our neighbours, its knowledge will be very helpful in the development of business in Slovakia. Its knowledge will surely make it easier and faster to succeed on its market. In the international arena, Slovak does not play a significant role.
