Who speaks Lithuanian?
Lithuanian belongs to the group of the Baltic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Approximately 5 million people speak this language.
Lithuanian plays the role of the official language only in Lithuania. In addition, we may communicate in it in the western Belarus, Latvia, Russia and the Polish area of Suwałki. It is also used by Lithuanian emigrant communities in Canada, the USA and Australia.
History of the Lithuanian language
First documents written in this language appeared around the 16th century. To a large extent, they were religious texts – “Katechizm” M. Mažvydasa is considered to be the first Lithuanian book. Shortly after 1620, the Polish-Latin-Lithuanian dictionary was published, which means that Lithuanian was already a mature language in those times. Its later shape was influenced by folk dialects (mainly Belarusian ones) and the Polish language. By 1919, the modern version of the Lithuanian language, based on the Aukštaitian dialect, was formed.
Lithuanian in business
Lithuanian plays a role in business only within business cooperation with Lithuania. It is a language used by 80% of the country’s population and its knowledge is undoubtedly useful in trade relationships. Outside Lithuania, it is practically not used.
