Who speaks Catalan?

Approximately 11 million people use Catalan all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. Catalan belongs to the group of the Western Romance languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Part of the linguists includes the Catalan language into the Gallo-Romance group. Catalan is one of the five most commonly used languages in Spain. The majority of this language’s users may be found in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Outside Spain, Catalan is the official language in Andorra. Some people who speak Catalan live in Murcia and Sardinia.

History of the Catalan language

The history of Catalan dates back to the 9th century AD. Catalan, similarly to Italian and French, originates directly from Latin. This language evolved on both sides of the eastern end of the Pyrenees. As of the 8th century, the Catalan counts expanded their territory southwards and westwards at the expense of the Muslims, bringing their language with them. During the 11th and 12th centuries, the Catalan rulers expanded up to north of the Ebro river, and in the 13th century they conquered the Land of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The city of Alghero in Sardinia was repopulated with Catalan speakers in the 14th century. The language also reached Murcia. In the Middle Ages, Catalan went through a golden age, reaching a peak of maturity and cultural richness. With the union of the crowns of Castille and Aragon, the use of Spanish gradually became more prestigious and marked the start of the decline of Catalan. The role of the Catalan language gradually reduced. The defeat of the pro-Habsburg coalition in War of the Spanish Succession (in 1714) started a number of acts, which imposed the use of Spanish in legal documentation in Spain.

Catalan in business

Catalan will be very helpful in business activities on the Spanish market. Catalan is used by approximately 19% of the inhabitants of this country; therefore, this language is worth being taken into account in the planning of the international expansion. The region where Catalan is widely used is famous for Barcelona – one of the two most important cultural and business centres of Spain. Therefore, acting on that market, it is extremely important to take care of professional translations of all corporate materials into Catalan, whereas in the case of importing goods (e.g. wine, for which Catalonia is renowned) to the Polish market, it is worth taking care of professional translations from Catalan into Polish. It will definitely contribute to the success on the demanding international market.
