Who speaks Icelandic?
The Icelandic language is used by only 350 000 people in the world. Most of them live in the only country in which we may communicate in this language – Iceland.
History of the Icelandic language
In 872, approximately 900 groups of Norse settlers arrived in Iceland The stages of the Icelandic language development are the period of Old Icelandic (up to 1550) and Modern Icelandic (after 1550). First settlers brought the Norse language (Old Norse), from which the Icelandic and Norwegian language developed. However, due to the isolation, Icelandic has hardly changed since the beginning of the history of human presence on the island. After the adoption of Christianity in 1000, as a result of the decision taken by the Althing (i.e. the national parliament of Iceland), the Latin alphabet was introduced on the island. However, the Icelandic alphabet contains a few extra letters. The current Icelandic differs from its original form mainly by pronunciation, whereas its spelling remained practically unchanged. It is worth mentioning that Icelanders are very resistant to words of foreign origin. Any loanwords, for example from English, are exchanged by Icelandic equivalents, which is supervised by the Icelandic Language Committee.

Icelandic in business
Although in the international arena Icelandic does not play a significant role, it does not mean that Iceland is not interesting from the Polish entrepreneurs’ point of view. Statistics show that Poles constitute the most numerous national minority in Iceland. What is worth mentioning, the first migration of Poles to Iceland took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
