Who speaks Mongolian?
Approximately 7 million people use Mongolian all over the world. It belongs to the group of the Mongolian languages constituting part of the Altaic language family. This group, except for Mongolian, includes the so-called Peripheral Mongolian languages, which are used by only a few hundred thousand people. The Mongolian language can be divided into the following dialects: Khorchin-Tumet, Khorchin, Chakhar, Ordos, Üdzümüchin, Oirat. The Mongolian language’s users may be found mainly in Mongolia. They also live in China and the Siberian part of Russia.
History of the Mongolian language
The earliest preserved Mongolian text is the Stele of Yisüngge. It was a type of report on sports written in stone in Mongolian on in 1224 or 1225. An important monument of the Mongolian language is the Mongolian-Armenian list of 55 words created in the 13th century by Kirakos Ganjakec. From the 13th to the 15th centuries, texts in Mongolian were written with four different alphabets. It is unclear when the Mongolian alphabet was developed and the cross-regional classical version of Mongolian began to be used. Before the period of conquests of Genghis Khan, we talk about the period of the Old Mongolian language. From the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries until the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, we talk about the Middle Mongolian period. As a result of conquests of Genghis Khan, numerous Mongolian dialects were scattered across vast areas from Manchuria to Eastern Europe. Over time, they developed into contemporary languages of the Mongolian family, which currently cover include more than 10 different languages and dialects. As of the 17th century, the Modern Mongolian language was formed. It includes visible differences in comparison with other Mongolian languages. After World War II, the Khalkha dialect became the base of the literary Mongolian language.
