Who speaks Turkish?
Turkish belongs to the group of the Altaic languages constituting part of the Ural-Altaic language family. It is used by approximately 83 million people.
We will communicate in Turkish only in select countries mainly in Turkey and Northern Cyprus, where it plays the role of the official language. Apart from these areas, there are Turkish speaking communities in Iraq, Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania.
History of the Turkish language
Turkish has been developing for about 1300 years. Initially, it appeared in Anatolia in the 11th century, when the Seljuqs took control over these areas. This language had many Persian and Arabic loanwords, which have been successively eradicated since the 19th century. In order to replace them, indigenously Turkish words are sought. It was undertaken on a large scale particularly in the 20th century, during the reign of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Since 1928, the Turkish language has been written with the Turkish alphabet based on Latin letters even though pronunciation can be challenging for new learners. For example, görüşürüz is a very difficult Turkish word that means… See you.
Turkish in business
Turkish will be useful for companies planning to expand their business activities to Turkey and Cyprus (its northern part). In this case, the knowledge of the language seems really essential. Outside these areas, it does not play a larger role although it’s still a good idea to use Turkish when doing business with Turks even outside the country.
