History of the Bosnian language
There is a lot of controversy over the Bosnian language. It is a huge challenge to determine an undisputed date from which we may speak about the Bosnian language. Although some scholars suggest that its beginnings should be sought in the Middle Ages, there is still no evidence for that. In the 1970s, the Bosnian variant began to be distinguished in the Serbo-Croatian language (next to the Serbian and Croatian variants). Only in the 1990s, the process of codification and standardisation of the Bosnian language was initiated. In this period, the first dictionary was published and its grammar was determined. First Bosnian textbooks were also published. In 1995, after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the official name of “Bosnian” was accepted. Nowadays some linguists still include the Bosnian language into the Serbian and Croatian languages.
