Who speaks Swedish?
Swedish belongs to the group of the North Germanic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Swedish is not a uniform language. It is divided into many clear dialects. The basic official Swedish language is based on Stockholm dialect. In this language, we find a number of loanwords, mainly from German, French and English.
Approximately 10 million people use Swedish in the world, practically only in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Estonia.
History of the Swedish language
We encounter first traces of the North Germanic language, from which Swedish originates, in the 3rd century AD. By the 10th century, Germanic languages used in the North appeared. When Christianity was brought to these territories, the Germanic languages began to be written in the Latin alphabet. By the 13th century, the Swedish language was developed. Interestingly, in the 18th century Swedish was divided into a ceremonial language used in Stockholm and language used “by the people”. The current official language was also created on the basis of the Stockholm language.
Swedish in business
Swedish is useful only in commercial contacts with Scandinavian countries. Although it is one of the official languages of the EU, but on the international arena Swedish does not play a significant role.
