Who speaks Persian?
Approximately 60 million people use Persian all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. There are seven varieties in the Persian language that are often classified as separate languages: Aimaq, Bakhtiari, Gilani, Guarani, Hazaragi, Luri and Mazandarani. Tajik, the official language of Tajikistan, is also considered a variation of the Persian language, which means another 8 million users. People living mainly in Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq communicate in Persian. The Persian language is referred to as the second language of Islam (first language – Arabic). Thus, in the Arab world it has a lingua franca status – i.s. the language commonly used and understood by most people.
History of the Persian language
Persian belongs to the Iranian group of the Indo-European languages. The history of this language starts about 500 years before our era. The oldest known text written in the Old Persian language, is the Behistun Inscription dated back to the time of Darius I, the Great. The transition from the Old Persian to Persian probably started before the 4th century before our era. However, the Persian language was confirmed 600 years later, when it appeared in inscriptions from the Sassanid epoch. Therefore, before these times no form of this language could be described in a reliable manner. Moreover, as the literary language Persian is documented much later, in the 6th or 7th century. Starting from the 8th century, the Persian language was gradually replaced by Modern Persian and the form of the middle period lasted only in the texts of Zoroastrianism. The contemporary version has been used since the 19th century. Then in the Arab world, the Arab vocabulary was still functioning, but many words were integrated with the Persian phonetic and grammar. In addition, under the Qajar dynasty a lot of Russian, French and English terms were introduced into Persian.
