Who speaks Arabic?
Arabic belongs to the group of the Semitic languages, precisely the Southwest Semitic languages, constituting part of the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is used by almost 300 million people. We may distinguish approximately 20 dialects of this language, functioning alongside the literary language.
In practise, we may easily communicate in this language in North Africa and Saudi Arabia. It is the official language in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Chad, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Yemen, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Syria or Tunisia. Interestingly, it is one of the official languages of the United Nations General Assembly.
History of the Arabic language
First traces of the Proto-Arabic language may be found in the 6th century BC! On the basis of inscriptions found, it was concluded that the language was divided into two main currents which used the Aramaic and epigraphic languages. The Arabic language in more contemporary form dates back to the 7th century AD, and its creation is strongly related to Islam. It was the so-called Classical Arabic, which later transformed into the literary language. Since the 19th century, we have been dealing with the standard / contemporary Arabic language.
Arabic in business
Along with the dynamic development of Islam, we may observe the increasingly wide use of Arabic. Its knowledge will be extremely helpful for companies which plan to operate in the northern part of Africa and other Muslim countries. Arabs are said to greatly appreciate foreigners who have even the basic knowledge of Arabic – it may open many doors, also to good business relationships.
