Who speaks Serbian?
Serbian belongs to the group of the South Slavic languages constituting part of the Indo-European language family. Serbian is used by approximately 13 million people.
We may encounter its users mainly in Serbia, but also in Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Bulgaria and Albania.
History of the Serbian language
Serbian was created by division of the Serbian and Croatian languages. Its users are said not to have any difficulties in communication due to similarities between these languages. Initially, Serbs used the Old Church Slavonic language. Vuk Karadžic, who gave up the traditional Old Church Slavonic language and based the language on one of the dialects, contributed to a great extent to the creation of the Serbian language in its current form. It was the the beginning of the 19th century. In 1791, the first Serbian-language middle school was established. In 1850, within the idea of the Slavs’ unity the so-called Vienna Literary Agreement was signed by writers from Croatia, Serbia, and one from Slovenia. It was the beginning of the development of a language which gained the name of the Serbo-Croatian language in the 20th century.
Serbian in business
Serbian plays a business role only in the field of business cooperation with Serbia, which is not a popular business destination. In the international arena, its knowledge will not be very useful in business activities.
