Who speaks Uzbek?

Approximately 18 million people use Uzbek all over the world. For the vast majority of them, this is their native language. Uzbek belongs to the group of the Karluk (Turkish) languages constituting part of the Altaic language family. Outside Uzbekistan, where it is the official language, Uzbek is used mainly in Afghanistan. In addition, a significant number of Uzbek users may be encountered in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan and China. Uzbek minorities live in Australia, Israel, Germany, Turkey, the United States and Ukraine.

History of the Uzbek language

In the 8th century, Uzbekistan came under the rule of the Arabs. For this reason, until 1927 Uzbek was recorded in the Arabic alphabet. The Uzbek language may be considered the direct descendant or a later form of Chagatai (currently extinct), which played the role as lingua franca in Central Asia from the 13th until 19th centuries. The author and poet Ali-Shir Nava’i, who is widely regarded as the father of the Uzbek literature, contributed to the popularisation of Uzbek. In 1940-1992, when Uzbekistan was a Soviet republic and operated as the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, the Uzbek language was recorded with the Cyrillic alphabet. Since 1992, it has been officially written in the Latin alphabet, however it is still possible to encounter records written in the Cyrillic or Arabic alphabet.

Uzbek in business

Although currently the business cooperation between Poland and Uzbekistan is in its infancy (in 2018 it was less than 1% of the Uzbek trade in goods), we may observe the upwards trend. In 2018, the Polish exports increased by almost 140% and import by approximately 4%. In order to commence economic activities in Uzbekistan, companies need the knowledge of Uzbek. In addition to its knowledge, it is extremely important to take care of professional translations of all corporate materials into Uzbek, whereas in the case of importing goods (for example fruit and vegetables, copper, yarn) to the Polish market, it is worth taking care of professional translations from Uzbek into Polish. It will definitely contribute to the success on the demanding international market.
