Creating foreign-language films is a big challenge. There are many things to consider, but the best way of reaching a foreign audience is through communicating with them in their native language. If you want to be successful and reach more customers and viewers, you should consider dubbing.
What is dubbing?
Put shortly, dubbing is the process of replacing the original dialogues in a film, television show, or other video content with a translated version in a different language. It involves recording brand-new dialogues that, ideally, should match the lip movements and timing of the original actors on screen. If dubbing is done correctly, the end result can seem like the video was made in a given language in the first place.
Dubbing is based on two major components:
- Creating a new sound track involving dubbed voices added to the movie in the post-production process.
- Replacing the video’s original soundtrack with the new one.

What’s the difference between dubbing and voiceovers?
Voiceover is based on a recording of a voice for a given video or movie. This voice is read in the target language by a voiceover artist (a professional reader or a voice actor selected by the client). Once this part is done, the voice recording is added to the video, and it doesn’t replace the original audio. This type of recording is made in a sound studio, and its advantage is the ability to preserve the original voices and sounds in the background.
On the other hand, dubbing replaces the original language version altogether. Voice actors record their lines which then replace the original soundtrack.
What does the dubbing process look like?
We can generally say that the typical dubbing process involves six essential steps:
The dubbing process typically involves several steps:
- Script adaptation: The original script needs to be translated and adapted into the target language, ensuring that the new dialogue matches the lip movements and maintains the original meaning. The natural sounding of new lines is also crucial.
- Casting: Dubbing involves experienced voice actors who are carefully selected to match the characters’ voices and personalities. The new soundtrack is always performed in a recording studio (just like with voiceovers). Moreover, thanks to the latest advancements in AI, we can use AI voice actors, which streamline the production process and are alternative to use.
- Recording: During the recording process, the voice actors watch the original footage on a screen while recording their lines. They aim to synchronise their words and sounds with the lip movements of the original actors/characters.
- Mixing and synchronisation: Once the dialogue is recorded, it’s then mixed with the original audio tracks, sound effects (which sometimes can be altered to be more natural for a new audience), and music. The timing and synchronisation are adjusted to ensure the new dialogue fits seamlessly with what’s visible on the screen.
- Quality control: Before the dubbed film can be published, it has to go through several quality checks. Every dubbed movie has to have 100% high-quality dialogue; only then can it be positively received by the new target audience. The final checks include accuracy, lip-sync, and overall sound quality.
- Distribution: Now, the final product can be shown to the public. In the case of feature-length films, they are usually distributed to theatres, broadcasters, and streaming platforms. In the case of smaller productions, they usually land on the company’s website and social media profiles. Such videos can later be used for marketing, onboarding, education, and PR purposes.
Where is dubbing usually used?
The truth is, in English-speaking countries, dubbing is not popular at all. That’s because there’s no need for such a service, especially when it comes to movies and videos made in the English language.
When it comes to other countries and foreign films, though, things are different, as people want to see content that’s natural and attractive to them, and that’s what dubbing offers. That’s why this service is especially popular in European countries where English is not the official or popular language. And the truth is, most films that use dubbing are intended for the younger audience (older audiences frequently prefer subtitles).
Dubbed content is oftentimes used in:
- Children’s programs, cartoon films, animations and movies
- Foreign shows and TV series
- Video games
- Documentaries and educational movies
What is needed to dub a movie or a video game?
In order to conduct a successful dubbing process, you need to take care of several important elements:
- Professional voice actors: Selecting dubbing actors’ voices can be a tricky assignment. After all, this “new” character has to sound natural, just like to original. Casting for the right actors can take a lot of time, but it’s surely worth the effort!
- New dialogues: Here, mere translation is simply not enough. Especially if you want the end result to sound natural, funny or clever, you need to adjust the original dialogue and original performance to the expectations of the new target audience. Here, localisation is also incredibly important. In fact, it’s the only way to obtain high-quality dialogue. And don’t forget that audio effects can differ, too! They need to be adjusted as well, and sometimes, there’s even a need to add sound effects that weren’t in the original language.
- High audio quality: As we’ve already mentioned, in order to create a good dubbed version of a movie, you need a professional sound studio with an experienced sound engineer who can manage the whole process from A to Z.
